The Treasure Ship
S.S. New York
by Q. David Bowers. Published 2008 by Stacks LLC.
In September 1846 the sidewheel steamer
S.S. New York
departed Galveston for New Orleans. What was expected to be a routine voyage proved instead to be its last. The ship broke apart after encountering a hurricane. Nearly 20 lives were lost and a safe filled with gold and silver coins sank to the sea floor. Author Dave Bowers tells the fascinating story of America and the two cities at the time of the ship's final voyage, its tragic fate and the salvage efforts that eventually led to recovery of much of the lost treasure. Full color photographs compliment the descriptions of many of the remarkable artifacts recovered. A final chapter briefly recounts the stories of four other ships carrying numismatic treasures that were lost in similar circumstances. 94 pages.
