AMERICAN EAGLE SETS FEATURE NEW VERSIONS OF COINS

Three multi-coin American Eagle 20th Anniversary sets went on sale at the U.S. Mint in late August.  Included in the sets are first ever versions of popular gold and silver American Eagles.  One of these sets - containing three 1 ounce gold eagles - sold out within 24 hours.

2006 Silver EagleThe American Eagle 20th Anniversary Silver Coin Set includes three one ounce silver eagles. One is an uncirculated coin but, unlike other uncirculated silver eagles, has a 'W' mintmark, signifying that the coin was struck at the Mint's West Point facility.  While other uncirculated silver eagles have been struck at West Point, they do not have a mintmark.  A second coin, which also has a 'W' mintmark, is the usual proof coin that has been offered separately each year since 1986.  The third coin has what the Mint calls a "reverse proof" finish.  The design elements have a mirrorlike finish, while the fields (background of each side) are frosty, which is just the opposite of a regular proof.  The reverse proof coin has a 'P' mintmark, indicating that it was struck at the Mint's facility in Philadelphia.  This 3 coin set is offered at $100, and the Mint has imposed an ordering limit of 10 sets per household.

A second set pairs an uncirculated silver eagle with a one ounce gold American Eagle.  Both coins have a 'W' mintmark.  This two coin set is priced at $850, and the Mint will also not accept orders for more than 10 sets per household.  Pictures of the obverse of uncirculated 2006 gold and silver eagles without mintmarks are included on this page.

2006 Gold American EagleThe third set is similar to the 3 coin silver set described above, but each coin is a one ounce Gold American Eagle.  All 3 coins have a 'W' mintmark.  Despite a price tag of $2610 and a limit of 10 sets per household, orders for the entire production of 10,000 sets were received by the Mint in less than 24 hours

All coins in these sets are dated 2006. The Mint states that shipping is expected to occur over a 10-12 week period beginning in mid-October.  No decision has been announced regarding whether these or similar products will be issued in the future.
