Proof coins are made specifically for collectors. Polished dies, higher striking pressure and more careful handling are used to produce beautiful coins with extra sharp details, mirror-like fields and cameo devices. All proof state quarters issued to date have been struck at the U.S. Mint facility in San Francisco and bear an 'S' mintmark.

Proof state quarters are available both in copper-nickel clad and silver versions. The clad coins are a "sandwich" of 75 % copper, 25% nickel outer layers over an inner copper core, the same as quarters struck for circulation since 1965.  The proof silver coins are 90% silver, 10% copper, the same as quarters struck for circulation prior to 1965.  Each silver proof quarter contains 0.18 troy ounce of pure silver.

The proof quarters offered on this page come from U.S. Mint proof sets issued with other coins.  The quarters and the plastic holder encasing them are the same as in the Mint's state quarter (only) proof sets.  Sets offered on this page do not include an outer box or certificate.  For proof state quarter sets that do include the outer box and certificate, please see our Proof Set listings.  Prior to 2004, silver proof quarters were issued exclusively in proof sets that also included 4-5 coins of other denominations.  Silver quarter (only) proof sets were not issued from 1999-2003 and therefore boxes and certificates do not exist for those years.
